Dump truck damages Everett overpass

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008 |

Traffic was backed up this morning on Route 16 west after a Dump truck slammed into an overpass below the same traffic rotary that was the site of a fiery crash one month ago, state police say.

The full extent of the damage to the Route 99 Sweetser Circle overpass has not been determined yet, but there is no immediate danger to motorists in the area, according to the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Two of the three lanes of Route 16 west are closed while DCR inspects the damaged portion of the overpass.

State police Sgt. Mike Rafferty said the driver was on the portion of Route 16 west that runs beneath Sweetser Circle when the trash truck’s movable dump, which was not fully lowered, hit the overpass. The driver received facial injuries and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The truck was not carrying anything at the time, Rafferty said. It’s unclear where the truck was headed.

A bridge inspector from the Department of Conservation and Recreation, which maintains Sweetser Circle, is at the scene now, said DCR spokeswoman Lisa Capone. A 100-feet long portion of a sidewalk above a damaged beam in the overpass has been closed for further inspection, she said.

Capone said the overpass has been deemed structurally safe. Caponesaid DCR inspectors are doing a more thorough inspection to determine what happened.

Two of the three lanes of Route 16 west were closed this morning for about 90 minutes and then re-opened for a brief time.

The driver of a fully loaded gasoline tanker truck was allegedly speeding when he lost control and crashed into a guard rail in Sweetser Circle. Leaking fuel flooded a nearby neighborhood and sparked three home fires. No one was killed. Elected Everett officials have since said they’ll propose legislation to ban trucks carrying harzardous materials from the traffic circle.

City of Syracuse cited in death of DPW worker

Monday, December 10th, 2007 |

The city of Syracuse is cited by the state labor department in a DPW worker’s death.

In July, Donald Ransom, 51, was killed when a dump truck backed up over him.

According to the state, the city was in violation of three federal safety laws at the time of the accident. The department of labor found that the dump truck did not have a working alarm for when it was in reverse and also didn’t have working reverse lights. They also discovered the city does not have an on-ground observer to help guide trucks when their alarms are not working, which is required by state and federal law.

Residents face long odds in crusher battle

Monday, December 10th, 2007 |

The folks in Highland Hills have issues with their new neighbor.

Destructors Inc. has run a concrete crushing plant at Interstate 20 and Interstate 35W for about 10 months, and local residents say that they can’t stand the noise and dust.

The company got what was supposed to be a temporary permit from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality this year. Now, the company is seeking permission to keep the plant there permanently. A decision could come as early as next month after a 30-day period for accepting written comments.

“We definitely do not want it,” said Moses Davis, president of the Highland Hills neighborhood association.

Accidents abound as winter blows in

Monday, December 10th, 2007 |

Christmas presents and a lecture were on Nancy Hammel’s mind as she drove east through the snow and sleet on Interstate 70 at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

In the bed of the truck were two living room chairs and a recliner, Christmas presents for a pregnant daughter. After dropping off the chairs in Olathe, Hammel, 54, was to head toward the airport and fly to Las Vegas to deliver a lecture on dental organizations.

Before all this happened, she drove over a slick spot, slipped left into the other lane and … BAM!

A semitrailer in the left eastbound lane slammed into her truck, flipping it multiple times into the median, where it landed on the roof.

Hammel would walk away with no injuries and make her flight to Las Vegas.

Relocation of Jeddah Dump Raises Fears of Unemployment Among Trash Pickers

Monday, December 10th, 2007 |

Ali is a young Chadian man who lives, works and eats in and from Jeddah’s trash dump.

“The dump is my life and I don’t know what to do when it’s relocated,” he said, referring to the municipality’s plans to relocate the dump to a larger, more modern complex, one that will also be fenced-in, making it difficult for men like Ali to continue their trade. The new dump is tentatively scheduled to open in January and will reportedly include recycling and reclamation facilities.

Ali is one of hundreds who see the hidden treasures in what is known to the rest of us as garbage. These nearly 150 trash-dump recyclers seek their wealth by burning garbage to expose metals and collect whatever can be sold as raw material.

A collision between a UPS delivery truck and a Volkswagen caused the closure of Banfield Road Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly after 4 p.m., police were called to the area about a mile off Peverly HIll Road, where the Volkswagen left the road and came to a stop nose-down in a ditch. The car’s air bags deployed and extensive front-end damage was visible as it was towed from the scene at close to 5 p.m..

Spider web cracks in the UPS truck windshield indicated the driver may have impacted the window, while the truck also showed signs of front-end and axle damage. An 18-wheeler tow truck was needed to haul it from the scene.

Traffic crashes kill 3

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007 |

Three people died in traffic accidents over the weekend, including a married couple whose vehicle swerved out of control on a snowy freeway in Sterling Heights during a late autumn storm.

Falling snow Saturday evening turned to heavy rain Sunday as temperatures climbed to the 48-degree mark and caused travel difficulties for motorists.

Temperatures today are expected to plunge with wind-chill factors making it frigid outside.

A Utica man and his wife died Saturday night when their 2006 Ford truck crashed on M-53 south of M-59 (Hall Road), according to a news release from Sterling Heights police.

About Dump Truck

A standard dump truck is a full truck chassis with a dump body mounted to the frame. The dump body is raised by a hydraulic ram mounted forward of the front bulkhead, between the truck cab (traction unit) and the dump body (semi-trailer). The tailgate can be configured to swing on hinges or it can be configured in the "High Lift Tailgate" format wherein pneumatic rams lift the gate open and up above the dump body.
