FOR the second time in less than a week, garbage trucks were on Thursday forced to wait in a long line at the Riverton City Waste Disposal facility in Kingston before they were able to dispose of waste collected mainly from the Corporate Area.
This time, as was the case earlier this week, the problem was associated with faulty equipment on the landfill.
The Observer was on the scene investigating rumours of a fire at the dump when a worker reported to landfill supervisor Cleveland Francis, that one of the tracks of the single working tractor on the site had broken and needed to be welded back on.
“Di track break off so mi a go weld it on back now. Mi tell dem sey fi send dem up two by two,” he said, addressing Francis.
“It will be down for at least an hour,” Francis later told the Observer.

Four dumptrucks, including two owned by the municipality of Consolacion, were apprehended by the provincial police and monitoring team of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) on Tuesday for hauling filling materials without permits.
The Penro said the limestone materials loaded in the dumptrucks were sourced from the “waste resulting from the road opening project of the municipality.”
Based on the Penro-Capitol records, no waste disposal permit had been issued to any private person or government entity for the hauling activity in the area.
Two 10-wheeler trucks were owned by Chona Sy and Virgilio Olivares of Consolacion.
Provincial Board Member Victor Maambong, chairman of the committee on environment, said he would investigate the incident next week.

More timely garbage collection is expected next year when the Department of Environmental Health brings on stream 10 new dump trucks with a combined $2 million price tag.
According to the department’s acting director, Winston Sweeting, the trucks’ arrival will enhance the garbage collection system in New Providence.
It comes in the wake of the government’s decision to put a hold on a plan that called for outside companies to assist the department with garbage collection.
Once the new trucks arrive the entire garbage collection systems is expected to be revamped, according to Mr. Sweeting.
The 10 to 12 trucks that are currently being utilized reportedly cost the department $250,000 each.
Mr. Sweeting advised members of the public not to place items such as car tyres or batteries in the garbage as they tend to damage the trucks, causing the department to fall behind in its work.

FOUR dump trucks, two owned by the Municipality of Consolacion, have been confiscated by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) for alleged illegal hauling of limestone.
The Penro monitoring team and the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) conducted a checkpoint last Tuesday in Conso-lacion.
The four trucks were flagged down at Danglag, Consolacion and were seized after the driver failed to present delivery receipts for the hauling activity, which is a violation of the Province’s quarrying ordinance.
Glenn Baricuatro, Capitol consultant on environment, said that either for commercial or government project, extraction of minerals like limestone has to have the necessary permits and the hauling must be covered by delivery receipts.

Shortly after 4 p.m., police were called to the area about a mile off Peverly HIll Road, where the Volkswagen left the road and came to a stop nose-down in a ditch. The car’s air bags deployed and extensive front-end damage was visible as it was towed from the scene at close to 5 p.m..
Spider web cracks in the UPS truck windshield indicated the driver may have impacted the window, while the truck also showed signs of front-end and axle damage. An 18-wheeler tow truck was needed to haul it from the scene.

The driver of a glass truck was killed Tuesday afternoon when his vehicle struck an ice truck head-on near a south suburban intersection.
The fatal crash preceded a separate crash about 1 ½ miles away where a pedestrian was struck by a turning vehicle.
The two vehicles, a glass truck and a Lang ice truck, were traveling in opposite directions on Southwest Highway near 55th Court when they collided Tuesday, Oak Lawn Police Chief Bill Villanova said.
The glass truck driver was killed as shards of glass showered the streets, the chief said. The ice truck driver was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was being treated for a broken arm, according to a Lang representative.
